Is GTA 6 Set in Miami? Leonida, Vice City and the Real Florida

Partly. Vice City is Miami, but Leonida is a whole invented state, and the differences matter for anyone planning a trip or writing about the game.

Neon-lit Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, at night

The short answer is: GTA 6 is set in a fictional American state called Leonida, and its biggest city, Vice City, is Miami with the serial numbers filed off. The official copy for the city names the real neighbourhoods, so the answer is not ambiguous in the way that "it is based on Miami" usually is.

What the publisher actually says

The official description of Vice City on the publisher's site reads: "We're a long way from the '80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America. The glamour, hustle, and greed of America captured in a single city. Each neighborhood has something to offer, from the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands of Ocean Beach, to the bustling panaderias of Little Cuba and the bootleg brands of the Tisha-Wocka flea market, out to the VC Port, the cruise ship capital of the world."

Four real Miami identifiers are in that paragraph. Ocean Beach is Miami Beach. Little Cuba is Little Havana. The VC Port is PortMiami. And "the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands" is a description of South Beach that you could write without ever having seen the game.

Leonida is not Florida, and it is not Miami either

The distinction that trips up most articles is between the state and the city. Leonida is an invented state that borrows from all of Florida, not a renamed Miami-Dade County. Six regions have been published for it, and only one of them, Vice City, is the Miami analogue.

RegionThe real place behind itWhere it is
Vice CityMiami and Miami BeachSouth-east Florida
Leonida KeysThe Florida KeysOff the southern tip
GrassriversThe EvergladesSouth-west Florida
Port GellhornPanama CityFlorida Panhandle
AmbrosiaClewiston and the sugar beltLake Okeechobee
Mount Kalaga National ParkProvidence Canyon State ParkSouth-west Georgia

That is Florida plus north Georgia plus the compression of several hundred miles of real coastline into one fictional map. The keys are the keys. The swamp is the swamp. But the panhandle and the sugar country and the mountains are pulled in from three different real places and stacked on top of each other.

The Miami details that give it away

  • The barrier island. The game puts a beach city across a bay from Downtown, connected by a causeway. Miami Beach is exactly that, and the game's ocean-side district is called Vice Beach rather than Little Havana.
  • The one-way street grid. Downtown Miami's signed one-way system survived into the game, which is a level of municipal detail most fictional cities do not carry.
  • The causeway toll plaza. Four lanes under a tiled roof, with the arches on the stuccoed piers and the signage on the same side as the real Venetian Causeway.
  • The tiki and pastel palette. The colour grading of the game's Vice City, saturated coral and teal against pastel pink, is the specific palette of Miami Beach's Art Deco hotels, not a generic 1980s Miami.
  • The port on its own island. Dodge Island, holding the container cranes and the cruise terminal, is an unusual enough real layout that the game reproducing it is a deliberate signal.

What is Miami and what is not

Even inside Vice City, not everything is a one-to-one match, and pretending otherwise is how fan sites end up confidently wrong. The publisher reorders geography constantly. In the real city the airport is 20 miles west of Downtown; in the game it is close enough to see from the approach. In the real city the Jade Ocean is 10 miles north of Miami Beach; in the game it has moved south to sit inside Vice Beach.

The honest summary is that GTA 6's Vice City is a Miami you have already visited, compressed and re-lit, with a few deliberate rearrangements so that the game reads well rather than accurately.

Coming to South Florida for the launch

If you are coming for launch week, the game is a better guide to this city than most travel guides, because it points at the parts that are visually distinctive and ignores the parts that are not. Ocean Drive, the causeway, Wynwood, Little Havana, the bay and the swamp: all of it is real, all of it is reachable, and all of it looks the way you have seen it.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 set in Miami?

Vice City in GTA 6 is modelled on Miami, Florida, and The official description names real Miami neighbourhoods including Little Cuba, Ocean Beach and the VC Port. The game as a whole is set in Leonida, an invented state that also takes in the Florida Keys, the Everglades, the Panhandle, the sugar belt and part of Georgia.

Is Leonida just Florida with a different name?

No. Leonida is a fictional state that borrows from several real places. It contains the Florida Keys and the Everglades as themselves, but also pulls in Panama City, Clewiston in the sugar belt and Providence Canyon in Georgia, and compresses them into one map.

Which GTA 6 city is Miami?

Vice City, and specifically the Miami area: the game maps Downtown Miami, Miami Beach, Little Havana, Wynwood, Little Haiti, the port on Dodge Island and the airport to the west of the bay.

Does GTA 6 get the Miami neighbourhoods right?

Mostly, with deliberate rearrangements. The barrier island, the one-way grid, the toll plaza and the port all match reality closely, while places like the Jade Ocean tower have been moved for dramatic effect.

Where is the nearest real thing to Vice City?

Ocean Drive in South Beach. The game's Vice Beach is Miami Beach, and the pink neon hotel fronts are the real ones.
